Gum litter has become an acceptable behavior.

If you have visited Pike PlaceMarket in Seattle then you have probably happened upon the very popular MarketTheatre Gum Wall. Located underneath ground level this unusual attraction is dedicated to the chewed piece of gum. This unique gum wall generates thousands of tourists a year who flock from all corners of the country to stick their gnawed gum among the other pieces of gum decorating the wall of the Market Theatre.

There is no denying that this brightly colored gum wall, which has been deemed one of the germiest attractions in the world, turns masticated gum into art. With the knowledge that gum is created from a non-biodegradable substance this gum wall will most likely be around for centuries.

It makes one curious regarding societies perception of gum pollution and how people discard their chewed gum. Why do people consider it acceptable behavior to litter, openly and publicly, in a location like this when they should be outraged that a tradition like this even began?

The white dots are chewing gum spat on the street.

If you were searching for a new home would you walk along the sidewalk and be swayed to buy, or not buy, by the years of discarded gum cemented to the sidewalk in front of the new property? Would you have the same reaction if someone had littered the front of the property with empty cups, crushed soda cans, and crinkled newspapers? Would dried up gum outside of a restaurant deter you from stepping inside for dinner?

Gum litter has become an accepable behavior in this country and it's time to stop ignoring this type of muck and start thinking responsibly.

I challenge anyone to take a walk down any sidewalk and see the destruction that gum pollution leaves behind on our city streets. It has become unmanageable. Educating ourselves, and our children, on how to discard our chewing gum is the easiest way to start breaking the bad habit of spitting out germ infested gum. Gum pollution awareness starts with being responsible and learning how to discard gum properly. The easiest way to be proactive in the fight against gum pollution is by using WraperZ when it's time to throw away chewed gum.

Don't spit it out, don't swallow it, just WraperZ it and keep nasty chewed gum waste off our streets.

Chewing gum pollution is everywhere.

Thank you, Joe Brucker, for your following thoughts on chewing gum pollution. Joe wrote:

"With the average person chewing 300 pieces of gum per year it's hard not to ask yourself, "Where does all this chewed gum go when the consumer has savored the last bit of flavor from their stick of gum?"

Chewing gum pollution. Unwanted gum full of germs and bacteria
ends up on the streets.

The answer is simple. The remains of chewed gum can be found on the streets, on airplane leather seats, park benches, and sticking to the bottom of our shoes on a hot summer day. Chewed pieces of gum are often placed inbetween library books, stuck to the backside of our most expensive jeans, and just about anywhere else an irresponsible gum chewer decides to spit out their finished piece of gum.

Unfortunately, we blindly trample over thousands of chewed pieces of gum that decorate the sidewalks and streets of our neighborhoods without any concern for what it is doing to the landscape of our planet. It would be hard to find a city where you could not play connect the dots with discarded chewing gum glued to the sidewalk.

Change your attitude - WRAP YOUR GUM!

A fun day with your family can turn into a nightmare. A brand new shirt gets ruined by a nasty chewing gum someone sticks to the side of a jumping castle.

WraperZ chewing gum wrappers should be offered at every fair
to provide an avenue for chewing gum disposal.
Let's make an assumption that it was a child who stuck the used gum there. Let's also assume that this child thought littering was an OK behavior and that it was perfectly fine to deposit their used gum on the side of the jumping castle. Should we blame the child for not knowing better or should we take a closer look at what has become acceptable in our society?

Littering in any shape or form is forbidden and is punishable by law. How many times have you spat your gum out? How many times have you seen anyone spitting their gum out? I will admit that I have spat my gum out. I have also sat in it and touched it on a railing. I remember how grossed out I was when I realized I had just touched someone's saliva. Yuck!

Wraper-z.com provides a solution to chewing gum pollution.
Green product "WraperZ" is an environmentally friendly wrapper
for a used chewing gum.

It's time to change our perception that chewing gum littering, is OK. It's not! Chewing gum is not biodegradable, it transfers germs, bacteria and blood through saliva. It may kill small animals who digest it. It is extremely costly to clean up. The only way we can stop wasting our cities' budgets on chewing gum pollution is if we stop our littering behavior. Chew it - Wrap it - Toss it. Educate your children, your friends, your loved ones about the consequences of chewing gum pollution. Take responsibility. Help them understand how easy it is to make a change, one chew at a time. We are counting on your support!

Milton Keynes set to become the first town in Britain to BAN chewing gum

  • Anyone caught chewing gum in the town would face an on-the-spot fine
  • It is aimed at cutting the cost of removing gum trodden into pavements
  • The Singapore-style ban is being proposed by businesses in the area
  • Traders found 22 pieces of gum in just one square foot of pavement

Anyone caught chewing gum would face an on-the-spot fine under the proposal, which was drawn up after 22 pieces of discarded gum were found in just one square foot of pavement.
Those in favour of introducing the ban point to the cost of removing gum, the nuisance caused by it sticking to people's shoes and the eyesore it creates.
The proposal has been put forward by After8, a group of businesses in the Buckinghamshire town, which plans to lobby the council to adopt it as policy.
The group wants resident to give their views on the plans as it looks to boost its case with the local authority.
After8 spokeswoman Carmel Blyth said it can cost up to 10p to remove a single piece of gum trodden into the pavement, which includes paying for the chemicals and manpower.
She said it is also unsightly, and added: 'Cleaning this mess up is an impossible task, it is costly and takes time, not to mention unpleasant.
'We are also trying to get the message across the people to be considerate. I is a problem in central Milton Keynes but I also think it is a nationwide problem.'

Chewing gum has been banned in Singapore for around 20 years, but the authorities made an exception for those with doctors prescriptions in 2004.

The strict ban on selling, importing or manufacturing gum was brought in by the city state's founding father, Lee Kuan Yew, who was fed-up with the litter.
Vandals were also reported to have been leaving used gum in keyholes and mail boxes as well as on buttons inside lifts.
Anyone caught breaking the ban by chewing gum can be fined but not, as has often been claimed, sentenced to corporal punishment.
Smugglers face a stiffer penalty, up to a year in prison and a fine equivalent to around £10,000.
Lee Kuan Yew once responded to criticism that banning gum stifled creativity because people could not concentrate,by saying: 'If you can't think because you can't chew, try a banana.'

Chewing gum pollution is caused by conscious decisions we (humans) make each time we put a piece of gum in our mouth. Where to put it when we are done with it? Spit it out or search for a piece of paper to wrap it into and throw it away? It's easy to unwrap gum and chew it. Why has it become so difficult to dispose of it responsibly?

On one hand, I am happy that this type of action is finally taking place. It's too bad though that it has come to this point and our legislators have to waste their time and our money to make decisions for us and pretty much tell us what we can or cannot do with a piece of gum. If that doesn't make you stop and think, I don't know what else will.

    Is spitting gum out littering?

Look closer. This isn't paint. These aren't bread crumbs. This is all dry gum.

Look even closer. Do you see that round thing in the middle? Yes folks, it is a drain. It's not that hard to miss, isn't it?

What's the matter with people, really! If you make a conscious decision to litter, why do you even bother pretending that you tried to spit your gum in the drain? Let me break it down to you. Contrary to popular belief, spitting gum out on a street IS littering. Spitting gum out next to a drain IS littering. Spitting gum out anywhere in public areas IS littering. This careless action pollutes our streets and neighborhoods. It may kills animals. It does cost money to clean up. Most cleaning solutions contain chemicals which add to the environmental pollution.

Chemicals, freezing, pressure washer or dry vapor are the methods of cleaning our streets from dry gum. Get more information HERE about these methods, their effect on your city budget and their negative impact on your environment.

Perhaps, the next time you are done with your gum, you will think twice about spitting it out carelessly.  It only takes a little effort to wrap your gum properly and disposing of it responsibly. Protect your environment. Protect your budget. Make a stand and say NO to chewing gum litter.

Over 650,000 metric tons of chewing gum waste is produced each year

When was the last time you stepped in gum? How frustrating was it to remove it? Did you feel embarrassed?

    Was it something like this?

Chewing gum manufacturing began in the US in the mid 1800s and has grown to over a $2 billion industry in the US. It is estimated that the US gum chewers chew an average of 370 pieces of gum per year. Sugar‐free chewing gum sales have been increasingly growing. In 2008 alone, the market increased by 12%. In the past few years the industry growth was estimated around 7%. 50% of gum sales in the US are to those in the ages 15-24.

Every year, over 650,000 metric tons of chewing gum waste is produced.

Many countries view gum as litter when discarded improperly - outside trash containers. Chewing gum is not biodegradable. Sticky gum litter causes damage to shoes, clothing, and it pollutes our environment. It is estimated that 90% of gum is carelessly discarded as litter – spat out on sidewalks, in parks, under desks or chairs. Some countries, like Singapore, have already banned gum chewing to reduce gum pollution.

Education regarding proper chewing gum disposal and proper chewing gum etiquette is key to raising awareness around littering and pollution in general. In the UK, gum removal companies charge between £0.45 and £1.50 per square meter for cleanup. In the US, gum removal can cost up to $2 - $3 per piece of gum.

    WRAPERZ

The WraperZ product provides a solution to a clean, sanitary and environmentally friendly way to gum disposal. One WraperZ booklet made from a recycled paper and containing 10 wrapping papers can cost as little as a few cents. Wrapping a used chewing gum in a piece of paper and disposing of it properly may seem like too much work, too much effort and something the chewers simply don’t feel like having to worry about. It is, however a step in the right direction, the step in an environment free of chewing gum pollution.

Will you join the revolution of freeing our environment of gum pollution?

    Free WraperZ in restaurants

When you walk into a restaurant, do you usually scan the hostess stand to see what free give aways you can score? I do! Most of the time it's matches, toothpicks and business cards. I don't really care for the toothpicks, a dental floss does a much better job. Business cards are OK, but let's be honest. In my case, they end up tossed and lost. Hardly do I ever rely on business cards when I look for a place to eat. Google and Apps do the search for me. I guess matches will do. They are mostly meant for smokers and even though I am not one, I take them anyway and use them for lighting my candles.

The CDC 2012 statistics say that 45.3 million people ages 18 and older smoke cigarettes in the United States (21.5% of men and 17.3% of women). Rising cost of cigarettes may help people realize that it's finally time to stop. Just to illustrate, the recent increase of the Illinois cigarette tax will cost a smoker about $300 a month to continue with this unhealthy habit.

As the cigarette prices continue to rise, the number of smokers will continue to drop and the need for old fashioned matches may dissipate. From the marketing perspective, a book of matches offers a prime advertising space that is valuable to restaurant owners.

Has the time come restaurant owners start thinking about what the next generation advertising medium might be?

If YOU had a choice between a free WraperZ booklet or a book of matches, what would you have selected?
